Description
This picture, taken in circa 1920, shows the Southern Pacific S-8 switcher number 1170 pushing a passenger car. Before the train are several individuals in pose. The 1170 was built in 1907 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After decades of service to Southern Pacific, the 1170 was leased in 1947 to a subsidiary called Southern Pacific de Mexico. Its Mexican tenure was a short one as, in that same year, the 33 foot-long, 140,000 pound engine was scrapped in Los Angeles. In the background is the Pacific Gas and Electric Steam Power Station, built in 1912. It operated with three 12,000 barrel oil storage tanks and two 200 barrel underground storage tanks until its decommission in 1957.
