Description
Roberto D’Aubuisson Arrieta, President of the Constituent Assembly, presides over a Constituent Assembly meeting in San Salvador, while other members are voting by a show of hands. Several flags and a portrait are visible behind D'Aubuisson. D'Aubuisson founded the Nationalist Republican Alliance, a far-right political party (ARENA) and in March 1982, ARENA won a third of the seats in the Constituent Assembly. In 1993 the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador established that D'Abuisson ordered the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero in 1980. The extreme-right wing politician and soldier was also the leader of the death squads that were created to destroy any left-wing opposition.
