This is a photograph of "a little Korean girl of Fushun Hopei [now Hebei]. She is a friend of Brother Peter but in spite of that she would not smile for him while he was taking her picture. So I [Fr. Gilleran] waited until he had 'snapped' her and then caught the smile as it broke loose." Rev. Gilleran was born in Nyack, MA and joined Maryknoll in 1923. He was ordained in 1932 and assigned to Wuchow in 1933. He returned to the U.S. in 1940 due to poor health, where he remained for the rest of his life doing teaching and promotion work for Maryknoll.
