Description
Photograph of boating on Lake Jonive in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, ca.1900. Ten rowboats are visible at center on a calm lake. The boats are filled with combinations of posed men, women, and a few children. The women are visible wearing white dresses and hats, while some hold umbrellas. The men are visible wearing dark suits and hats, and hold the paddles. Foliage is visible on the banks to the left and right and in the background. "Look at old maps and you'll see that the Laguna once held enormous amounts of water. That 'impediment to progress' was an extension of the river's natural waterbed in some places, like forgotten Lake Jonive near Sebastopol, it was 60 feet deep. Now it's almost entirely filled in and paved over. Simply put, there's more water in the river because we've given it nowhere else to go." -- unknown author.
