Description
Photograph of the Conness Number Six engine with fuel box, standing on a trestle, Central Pacific Railroad, March, 1865. A group of people stand on the fuel box, one man stands at the door to the engine cabin, while two men stand on the cow-catcher at front. The Conness was the first of what became the typical freight locomotive of the Central Pacific Railroad, and went into service in March 1865. It had six drive wheels and was considered a wonder of the day because it could haul eighteen light freight cars. It was named after one of California's early senators. In June, 1908 it was scrapped after forty-three years of service.
