Description
Leon J. Pinkson (1878-1967) began his career at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1893 as a receptionist, and by 1909 was the newspaper's automobile editor, a position he held into the 1950s. In 1923 he was elected president of the Press Club in San Francisco. In 1912 Pinkson lobbied for automoble access to the Yosemite Valley and drove the Big Oak Flat Route. The following year he accompanied the Indiana Automobile Manufacturers Association automobile tour from Indiana to the Pacific. In 1923 Pinkson advocated for a second highway from San Francisco down the peninsula (which became the Bayshore Highway), and during World War II was involved in the new Union Square parking garage.
