The book takes place during major historic time periods such as, the Civil War, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Scully goes on to explain how the main character, Regina, is loosely based on her great grandmother and how she was inspired by other family stories. Also in this interview, she explains how the book deals with race and class issues that span the time periods through a series of family and personal tragedies.
