Photograph of a Mojave Indian woman sitting on the ground, pounding mesquite beans in a metate made from the stump of a tree, ca.1900. She wears a woven blanket around her shoulders, a long plain skirt, and print shirt. She kneels behind the metate with a large shallow basket containing beans to the right. Behind the woman, a mud and stick dwelling with a thatched roof can be seen. A large open doorway can be seen at right. Beside the wall at left sit several containers including a crate and a pail.
