Description
Taken from the north side of J Street, this Feb. 29, 1932, photograph shows the façade of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 3860 J St. Prominent in the photograph are a rose window, Romanesque-style entrance, and Lombardy-style steeple. Harry Devine, the church’s architect, sought to style the building in the shape of a true Roman cross, with the transept composed of two chapels, their ceilings lower than the rest of the structure. Sacred Heart’s shell was composed of both clinker and common brick. In an ironic and near-tragic twist, Devine, one of Sacramento’s most celebrated architects, crashed into Sacred Heart in the summer of 1959 when his car jumped the curb. Damage to the church, church grounds and Devine was minor.
