Description
John K. Northrop (left) and three men (identified as pilot Bernt Balchen, explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and Jay (?)) discuss plans for Ellsworth's expedition to Antarctica. They are standing next to the "Polar Star", one of two Northrop Gammas that were the first aircraft produced in 1933 by the newly established Northrop Corporation. In April 1936, Lincoln Ellsworth donated the Polar Star to the Smithsonian. Photo dated: October 18, 1932.
