Photograph caption dated August 26, 1953 reads, "Three phone threats to Dorothy Lamour in Spreckels case told; shown with husband, W.R. Howard III." The threats refer to Dorothy Lamour and William Howard III serving as witnesses and testifying against Adolph Spreckels II, heir to the Spreckels sugar fortune. Spreckels was accused of beating his ex-wife, Kay Williams with her own shoe. Lamour, a close friend of Williams, had been the one to take Williams to the hospital. Spreckels was later found guilty of the beating and served a term of 30 days.
