Description
Image of people, including a man in a bathing suit and children, standing on the original 99 steps leading to the beach, located at the end of Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica, California. "F.C. McKinnie" painted on sign at top of steps, possibly an advertisement. McKinnie had a drug store in Santa Monica.
"Fred C. McKinnie, Santa Monica, original 99 steps 1886"--text, handwritten in pencil on verso. This wooden staircase, the “99 Steps,” was constructed in 1875 to allow easy access to the beach. (Source: Santa Monica History Museum, santamonicahistory.org) Title and date transcribed from item.
