Description
In this oral history, Mill Valley native George Cagwin brings into view a significant stretch of town history as he recounts his long and spirited life. Born in 1936, George begins his story a few decades earlier, around 1910, when his grandparents on his mother's side - Swiss nationals expatriated in Peru - moved their family to Mill Valley. George's paternal grandparents, meanwhile, were settled in Larkspur, having moved west in the 19th century. His parents met at Tamalpais High School, which George also attended. George gives a rich and detailed account of his upbringing in Mill Valley, including his various family homes, childhood friends, pastimes, schooling, sports, adolescent exploits, and so on. He also discusses his later life, including his family, work in real estate, and world travels. George recalls a number of local personalities and many old, long-vanished businesses, sharing his thoughts on how Mill Valley has changed and his feelings on how the town remains a wonderful place to call home.
