Description
The photo caption printed in the Sacramento Bee on May 2, 1968 states: "While work continues on the elevated phase of the Interstate 5 Freeway through the western fringe of Sacramento, motorists commuting go Broderick, Woodland and West Sacramento take this detour. Arrows going west show the general flow of traffic from I Street south along 3rd and up a curving ramp of the new freeway onto the I Street Bridge. Eastbound traffic uses the same ramp for descent and is funneled along J Street into Sacramento's downtown. The new ramp, which ultimately will become an I5 off-ramp, has been pressed into service because of the necessity of closing the I Street Bridge approach ramp. Pedestrians use the snail-shell shaped, spiral structure near the ramp top to climb to the bridge height or descend to street level."
