Description
Melissa Richardson Banks and Ignacio Alvarez are shown dancing at the Cuban Festival held at Echo Park Lake. A crowd of people can be seen facing the stage. The Echo Park Cuban Festival is the only major celebration in Los Angeles of Dia de la Independencia de Cuba (Cuban Independence Day), which commemorates the Caribbean Island's freedom from Spain on May 20, 1902. Thousands of people gather for this festival, which is usually held on the birthday of Cuban writer, poet, and patriot Jose Marti (1853-1895). The free family festival includes Cuban music, dancing, food, and art. Photograph dated May 17, 1998.
