Description
A photograph of the wagon and carriage hardware company Waterhouse & Lester. Joining its San Francisco and New York locations, the Sacramento branch began in a building on 7th street, eventually expanding to a second location at 200-202 J Street by 1875. In addition to importing hardware, they purchased the stock of declining businesses for resale. They exhibited at the California State Fair in 1877 and by 1882 moved to a site across from the building in the photograph before relocating to 709-715 J Street in early May of 1884. With the advance of technology, they began to shift from their approach of being primarily a supplier of wagon lumber to being a supplier of metals and coal. Owners attempted to adapt the business following the rise of automobiles but the company closed in 1909.
