Description
Ruth Julia Slenczynska was born to Polish immigrants in Sacramento on January 15, 1925. Her father started giving her instruction in musical theory when she was three, and started her on piano when she was three-and-a-half. A year later, she was playing concerts at Mills College in Oakland, California, where she would navigate - from memory - pieces from composers like Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. She went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and then teach musical theory at various universities. Pictured here, in 1935, are yen-year-old Ruth and her father, Josef.
