Description
The W.T. Grant Company’s location at 722 K Street Store appears in this September 1, 1944, photograph. Grant came to Sacramento in 1932 in an effort to expand its 39 state empire. The store opened in 1933, but was flamed in December of 1936 to a tune of well over 100,000 dollars. It reopened in July 1937 after a 400,000 dollar infusion to be one of the most modern stores in the city, complete with air conditioning that assured, during the city’s scorching summer months, the customers entered a building 12 to 15 degrees cooler than outside. The store had kept a strict pricing scale of one cent to 25 cents until the advent of the Second World War prompted restructuring and an increase of the price ceiling to one dollar. Marking methods like this kept Grant’s in the black through most of the Great Depression and into the War. The company phased out its Sacramento locations, starting in 1975.
