Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph caption dated July 25, 1956 reads "Sailors run up flag code. Quartermaster Paul Fields, 28, Tarzana lumberman, and seaman Shelton L. Daniel, 20, North Hollywood draftsman, 'close up' bringing signal flags up on mainmast lanyard. Colorful flags play important part in fleet maneuvers and date back to early sailing days. Flags are used when radio silence has to be observed. They are stowed alphabetically. A seasoned signalman can whip out complete code with flick of the wrist in seconds."
