Description
First known photograph of Los Angeles showing the Mission Church and Plaza are from the hill (Fort Hill) west of the Plaza looking east, ca.1857-1861. The bell tower is 1-story high and the church has a flat roof. The brick building (built ca.1860) in the Plaza is the water tank for the first water system. Jose Antonio Carrillo's house (lower right corner) is the only adobe in Los Angeles with a tile roof (later the site of the Pico House). The 1-story house belonged to Ygnacio Del Valle and the 2-story house (on the east side of the Plaza the 2nd story was added in the mid-1850s) belonged to Vicente Lugo. To the left of Lugo's house is the house of Juan Ramirez. Nathan Keller's house is in the rear.
