Photograph article dated February 19, 1963 reads, "Army Chief Warrant Officer John F. Leonard Jr., son of Mrs. Mae Karr, 11053 Noble Ave., San Fernando, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in South Viet Nam. A graduate of San Fernando High School, Leonard received the medal for his "persistence and fearless movement through enemy fire" in the recovery of three downed CH-21C helicopters. Leonard volunteered for the mission, and flew one of the two helicopters successfully recovered. The third one was shot down for a second time by Communist guerrilla troops. A member of the 57th Transportation Co., Leonard entered the Army in 1958. His wife, Mary, lives in Salinas, Calif., near his last station in the United States, Ft. Ord." Note: Gen. Earle G.
