Born in state of New York in 1823. Studied law. Arrived in California in 1847 by vessel "Susan Drew", part of Colonel Stevenson's Regiment. Worked as general manager for M. G. Vallejo, married Vallejo's daughter Fanny (Epifania de Guadalupe). Involved over years as lawyer, banker and speculator. Appointed diplomatic agent to Mexico by U.S. government. Died in 1909.
