“Group of natives gathered at the wailing of the death of a chief.” Exterior view showing James Hay Lawrie leaning on a tree next to a group of indigenous men and women seated at the wake of a chief. There could be several chiefs in one particular village and their influence varied from one to another. Lawrie was a Presbyterian missionary from Edinburgh and based on Aneityum [Anatom], New Hebrides [Vanuatu], from 1879-1896. Later he was minister of several charges in New South Wales. He died in 1929.
