In answer to a federal plea for Civil War volunteers, a body of Philadelphia merchants and businessmen known as the Corn Exchange Association resolved in July 1862 to give money and lend influence to furnish a regiment of Pennsylvania soldiers. About 1,000 men, induced by a liberal bounty and extra incentives, were recruited; they then drilled at Camp Union, as shown in this print. The division was officially called the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers but was known throughout the war as the Corn Exchange Regiment of Philadelphia.
