Description
Image of military Camp Union near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with American Civil War soldiers of the 1118th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry drilling and band marching in front of rows of tents and a large American flag as civilian spectators watch; names of committee members of the Corn Exchange Regiment in bottom margin.
Date supplied by cataloger based on copy held by Library Company of Philadelphia. "Del & Lith by J. Magee"--text, bottom left margin. "Publd. by Boell & Magee 311 Walnut St. Phil."--text, bottom center margin. "Lith. & Print by W. Boell 311 Walnut St. Ph"--text, bottom right margin. "To the President and members of the Corn Exchange and the Officers and men of the Regiment this Plate is Respectffully [sic] dedicated by the Artists"--text, bottom center margin. In answer to a federal plea for Civil War volunteers, a body of Philadelphia merchants and businessmen known as the Corn Exchange Association resolved in July 1862 to give money and lend influence to furnish a regiment of Pennsylvania soldiers. About 1,000 men, induced by a liberal bounty and extra incentives, were recruited; they then drilled at Camp Union, as shown in this print. The division was officially called the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers but was known throughout the war as the Corn Exchange Regiment of Philadelphia.
