Description
A villager sits between wooden columns while livestock graze nearby in a Maasai village in Tanzania. Cattle ownership symbolizes wealth and economic prosperity among the Maasai people. Cattle are the primary suppliers of food - the meat, milk and blood are all consumed. Cattle dung is also used to cover the roof of houses. Livestock is traditionally a major source of income and wealth among the Maasai people in Tanzania. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
