Extreme right-wing presidential candidate and army major Roberto D'Aubuisson speaks at an event at ARENA (Nationalist Republican Alliance) in San Salvador. He is wearing a bullet-proof vest and a wrist watch and speaking to a microphone. In 1993 the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador established that D'Aubuisson gave the order to assassinate Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero and human rights campaigner. The extreme-right Salvadoran soldier was also a leader of the death squads put in place to eliminate leftist opposition. Richard Cross took this image in 1982 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
