Description
Annotation translation: "Dajak grave in Siangland, behind Puruk Tjahu. The burial place for this family grave is in front of the house. [This sort of grave] is often covered, here it is in the open air. The carved figures at the corners (made from black ironwood) have tongues hanging out, (probably so that the blood of offerings may be painted on them). The staves in the background, the so-called tora, remind the spirits that the correct offerings to the dead have been made. The chief in Seripoi gave Rev. Schreiber four such tora to be the corner posts of a school building."
