2017-0052. Shows the west side of Sutter Creek. Buildings include (from left to right): American Exchange Hotel, Keyes Store, Butcher Shop. Individuals in image are (from left to right): Clarence King, son of proprietor of hotel; Mr. Johnston, manager of hotel; John Keyes; John A. McIntire; William Keyes; I.N. Randolph, Sheriff of Amador County. The Nixon Hotel is the third structure erected in the same place, the two previous having been destroyed by fire. When the town was located the peak of the hill in front of the present Bank Building was about 25 feet higher than the street in front of the Hotel. In making the excavation, the bedrock slate was used in filling the low parts of Main STreet and East end of Spanish Street at its intersection with Main Street. Reproduction made from original (photographed in 1800s) which belongs to donor John A. McIntire. John A. McIntire John Albert McIntire came to California in 1856 and joined his father in mining gold at Sutter Creek, Amador County. In 1864 he moved to Sacramento and began working for the firm of Newton Booth and Company, importers and wholesale grocers. Later he became the firm's president. In 1892, on the death of Newton Booth, he sold the business for the heirs and became interested in Amador County mining affairs. He died November 2, 1931. Also have negative: no. 29,814 (4x5 in.).
