1895-1901 studied at the Odessa Drawing School 1901-09 studied at the Academy of Art under Dmitrii Kardovskii, Il'ia Repin and other professors 1905-07 contributed caricatures to journals of political satire 1906 contributed to the exhibitions of the World of Art, the Union of Russian Artists, Moscow, and the Salon d'Automne in Paris and thereafter exhibited frequently in Russia and abroad 1907 designed the production of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Die Hochzeit der Sobeide" at Vera Komissarzhevskaia's Theater, St. Petersburg 1908 worked on the designs for Sergei Diaghilev's production of "Boris Godunov" in Paris with Alexandre Benois and Alexander Golovin 1909 worked on the designs for Diaghilev's production of the "Maid of Pskov" with Golovin and Nikolai Roerich 1911 created the decor and costumes for Diaghilev's production of "Sadko" 1912-14 designed many ballet and drama productions such as Milii Balakirev's "Islamey," Leonid Andreev's "Ocean," and Michael Fokine's "Une Nuit d'Egypte" 1913 collaborated with Anna Pavlova on a production of "Les Préludes" for the Manhattan Opera House, New York 1914 designed Vaslav Nijinskii's production of "Les Sylphides" in London 1918 emigrated to the U.S., where he lived for the rest of his life 1918-20 one-man exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and other institutions 1919 designed Xavier Leroux's "La Reine Fiammette" and Maurice Maeterlinck's "L'Oiseau Bleu" for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the first of several major productions for New York, Chicago, and other U.S. cities 1921 designed Sergei Prokof'ev's "Love for Three Oranges" for the Chicago Opera company 1922 designed Nikolai Rimskii-Korsakov's "Snegurochka" (Snow Maiden) for the Metropolitan Opera 1926 after working on designs Puccini's "Turandot" (not produced) gave more attention to painting and to teaching 1928 became a professor at the Art Institute of Chicago where he taught for more than thirty years.
