Survival school students (back row, L-R) Jack Madeley, Ron Venn, (first row, center) and Marilyn Chandler each carry a rifle and squat into position during a simulated search and destroy assignment in a forested area. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin also spent time studying the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
