In June 1983, a young female Contra soldier kneels beside a campfire as she stirs the rice that is cooking on a pan at El Porvenir Farm, located two kilometers from the Honduras-Nicaragua border. On her left part of her shirt she is wearing a blue-and-white patch that reads "FDN," which identifies her as a member of the Nicaragua Democratic Force. She is wearing a black rosary around her neck. She is a member of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN in Spanish), known informally as "Contras."
