"This is part of a huge system of canals and pumping plants developed to provide for distrivution [sic] of water in the San Joaquin Valley. The water is necessary in order to grow the crops and orchards shown in the picture. Mt. Diablo can be seen in the background" -- verso. Built between 1937 and 1948 as part of Central Valley Project; runs between Oakley and Concord.
