Description
Photograph of a priest with a snake in his mouth in the Hopi Snake Dance Ceremony, Oraibi, Arizona, ca.1898. A brave can be seen leaning down to a snake on the ground to the left of center, while other dancers can be seen to the right of him. The dancers have long hair and can be seen wearing armbands and necklaces. Their upper torsos are naked, and they wear short patterned skirts, moccasins, and long furry animal tails. The dancers are moving in front of a group of about 4 chanters(?) visible from behind at right who wear long furry animal tails. Numerous onlookers are spectating from atop the pueblo in the background as well as on the ground. One of them shades herself with black umbrella.
