Total production of the California oil fields since 1862 approximates 4,5000,000,000 barrels. The Midway-Sunset district, with its 787 million barrels, is the leading producer of the state, though the bringing in of the first oil well was recorded as recently as 1900. Ranking next below Midway is Long Beach, though approximately 30 times less in area with a production of 551 million barrels. Santa Fe Springs, a 1921 discovery, ranks third in total production.
