Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the interview, Cyrus Jung was an Associate Transportation Engineer for Caltrans District 4 office in San Francisco. When the earthquake happened, Jung was on a trip to China and learned about the Loma Prieta Earthquake while listening to a shortwave radio Voice of America program early in the morning. At first, he did not know how extensive the damage from the earthquake was in the Bay Area, as Chinese TV just showed video of Vice President Dan Quayle in front of the Marina Green in San Francisco. Jung called family members out of concern of what had happened. When he returned to California he continued to work on pavement relocation projects, and describes what he saw in earthquake damage around the Bay Area.
