Description
Photograph of "Going to the Marrienda", a drawing of couples on horseback, from Walter Colton's "Two Years In California", 1850-1859. A man with a dark suit, large hat, and long hair sits towards the rear of the front horse at center with a lady in a dark dress and lightly-colored shirt sitting in front of him. The darkly-colored horse in an intricately-embroidered saddle has all four legs off the ground as does the horse of the second couple on the right. The first couple rides next to palm trees which stand above a row of dark bushes and rocks on the left while the several other couples are faintly drawn against the pale mountainside on the right. Photoprint reads "'Going to the merrienda (picnic)', illustration from Walter Cotton's 'Two Years in California' published in Philadelphia in 1853".
