Description
This 1941 photograph shows both the interior and exterior of the 400-seat chapel at Mather Field. Built the same year that this photograph was taken, the structure had a portable altar, pulpit and lectern, so as to accomodate Mather's various Christian denominations. Jewish personnel were encouraged to attend the off-base Mosaic Law Synagogue or Temple B'nai Israel. During periods of special observance, Jews were granted passes for extended leave.
