View of people riding the Thompson Gravity Switchback Railroad, which traveled across the ravine between the Arcadia Hotel, standing on the beach in background, and the town. The hotel is shown facing onto Ocean Avenue, with the ocean behind it.
Title devised by cataloger. Date devised by cataloger based on history of area and photographer; the hotel was completed in 1887; the roller coaster operated from 1887 to 1889; and the photographer died in early 1888. With photographer's stamp on verso: "E.G. Morrison, Photographer at Santa Monica. In Tent, Up the Beach, Near Santa Monica Bath House ..." Verso has light green mount.
