Description
1989-1148. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. 1, leaf 28. A four story building is burning; smoke issues from the roof; building is located on the right side of the photo; on the same side of the street is another 3 story building on the extreme right; from across the street on the left two streams of water are aimed at the burning building; center lower right a crowd views the scene; fire hoses loop in front and at the corner of the burning building. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Capital Hotel, erected about 1868, located at the Southwest corner of 7th & Kay street.Fire destroyed this building on the morning of November 24th, 1929... Old Golden Eagle Hotel Building on the right, first erected in 1853, remodled in 1867, the building was then extended to 7th street... Old Post-office building, on the left, erected from about 1891 until 1894, was used as the post-office until 1933..."
