Photograph was edited for publication purposes
Photograph caption dated October 31, 1955 reads, "Rare Palmer .50 caliber carbine, above, manufactured in 1865 by Lamson and Co. of Vermont, (no longer in business) was one of first accepted bolt action weapons. Only 1,000 of this model were made. Rifle fired a rim-fire metallic cartridge which replaced then commonly used paper cartridge. Below is Cosmopolitan .50 caliber Percussion Carbine manufactured in 1864 by now defunct Union Rifle Co. Both weapons were used by Cavalry."; See images #00144197 through #00144205 for all photos in this series.
