Photograph was edited for publication purposes; Photograph also used in article dated February 18, 1965.
Smith died on February 17, 1965, after she and a friend crashed in a rented Cessna 181 near Big Pine, California.
Photograph caption dated January 23, 1965 reads, "Guest speaker at the annual Amelia Earhart dinner sponsored by the Zonta Club of North Hollywood will be Joan Merriam Smith, Long Beach, first woman pilot to circumnavigate the globe at the equator since Amelia's [sic] Earhart ill-fated trip in 1937."
