Description
Portrait seated at desk. "Listening to the Brownie's chat, yours as ever, Palmer Cox" -- handwritten below image. 2012-1292. Palmer Cox was born in Granby, Quebec in 1840. Came to California 1863 via Isthymus on the steamer "Ocean Queen" and "Constitution." Worked as car builder for the railroad before turning to writing and drawing, contributing stories and cartoons to San Francisco newspapers. In 1880, began series of children's stories and drawings of brownies, which became widely popular. Retired to his home town in Canada, died in 1924.
