Description
Sacramento Weekly & Alta California was published Saturdays from October 16, 1909 to July 29, 1911 by the Sacramento Weekly and Alta Publishing Co. Managing Editor Evander B. Willis was a high-ranking member of the Masonic Order with newspaper credentials across the nation, dating back to the Civil War, and Business Manager Joseph. M. Anderson was former Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #6 in Sacramento and owner of a printing shop at 416 J Street. The periodical was dedicated to the promotion and development of Sacramento and the Sacramento Valley. Regular columns covered society, politics, club life, music, drama, sports, short stories, serials, fraternal news and general interest articles. Earlier issues featured front page photographs of prominent people in Sacramento Valley including Lincoln Steffens. Holiday issues featured color covers and extra pages. In 1911 Circulation was estimated at 15,000. This collection consists of 42 of the 94 issues of the periodical issued on Saturdays between October 16, 1909 and July 29, 1911. Loose issues beginning with Volume One, #One running 19 issues were followed by a “New Series” beginning as Volume Six with issues consecutively from 20 through 26. The collection is continued with one bound volume containing issues from Volume Eight #53 through Volume Eight #94. Issues numbered 27 - 52 (April 16, 1910 - October 8, 1910) are missing. Issue #60 is numbered as #90 and the July 15, 1911 and July 22, 1911 issues are both numbered #92. Issues are 16 to 34 pages in length.
