Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989.
The sport of beach volleyball originated in Santa Monica in the 1920s, while the first tournament featuring two-man teams took place in the late 1940s at State Beach. In the 1970s, prize money became commonplace at major tourneys like the Manhattan Beach Open; now, beach volleyball is an Olympic sport. Here, UCLA's Sinjin Smith slams home a point. Photograph dated: August 22, 1983.
