Description
Detailed, close-up view of a completed wax design on light blue fabric. The design has yet to be dipped and dyed in indigo because the wax is still visible. The design will go on to become the center piece design for a baby carrier (Daim Nyias, Dlaim Hlaab Nyas). The motifs on this piece include x-shaped motifs: hook (tus khawb), fences (laj kab), and borders which are outlined with seeds (noob). The prevalent cross-hatching imagery can be connected to the fence motif, used to imbue a sense of protection and safety over babies. The border includes zig-zag mountain motifs. Handwritten inscription on mat board beneath photograph reads, "Baby carrier center / Design 8." Image misidentified as baby carrier #1 on verso. Notes on verso read: "L.F.C. [handwritten black ink, upper left verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, upper left verso]; HMong Baby Carrier # 1 (Photo 1), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4048.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]" Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
