Description
Portrait of lawyer and oil man George F. Getty (1855-1930). A specialist in insurance and corporate law, Getty got into the oil business and made a fortune with his Minnehoma Oil Company. The company's name is a combination of Minnesota and Oklahoma, two states where the Getty family lived prior to coming to California in the early 1900s. In 1913, George lent his son Jean Paul money for oil investment. Jean Paul, in turn, made his first million within two years. Together father and son incorporated the Getty Oil Company, the predecessor of Getty Oil. At the time of his death in 1930, George Getty's estate was valued at between $10,000,000-$15,000,000.
