Photograph caption dated October 16, 1985 reads, "Federal aviation investigators inspect the wreckage of a home-built, single-engine airplane that crashed into a sod field after takeoff at Van Nuys Airport yesterday at 10:25 a.m., killing the pilot and his female passenger. The identities are being withheld by the authorities, 'The engine cut out and he tried to turn and go back,' said airport spokesman Jack Francois. The fiberglass aircraft caught fire and melted after impact. National Transportation Safety Board officials are investigating the crash. The aircraft, christened, 'Glassair' by the pilot was built from a $25,000 kit."
