Pasadena's City Hall is decorated with flags and banners as 28,000 balloons are released at the main entrance to celebrate that city's centennial year on June 19, 1986. Among the festivities was a time capsule which will be opened in the year 2086. It contains a vial of vintage 1986 Valley smog. Church bells pealed all over town and thousands of residents cheered as an exulted Mayor John Crowley said, "Pasadena, you look just fine." Then, as a jazz band played, the residents sat for a giant group picture.
