Description
Photograph of Mission Santa Barbara, showing crucifix, California, 1898. At center, a large crucifix is visible showing a gory and realistic depiction of Christ on the cross. Puncture wounds can be seen on the statues hands, feet, and side. Decorative candleholders supporting tall candles can be seen flanking the crucifix. Behind the crucifix, several boxes are visible. On top of the boxes, a decorative box that appears to be the tabernacle is visible. The crucifix was brought from Mexico in 1837. It was used only once a year on Good Friday. A priest at the head of the procession of priests would carry it from the main entrance of the church to the altar.
